TOKYO -- Nissan Motor is reviving the post of chief operating officer and has named Chief Competitive Officer Yasuhiro Yamauchi as the appointee, the Japanese automaker said on Tuesday.

The appointment will take effect on May 16, the company said. Nissan has not had a COO since Toshiyuki Shiga, currently a director, stepped down from the post in 2013.

Chief Quality Officer Christian Vandenhende, originally from Nissan's French alliance partner Renault, will assume a newly created position of vice COO on the same day.

Yamauchi, who joined Nissan in 1981, is a veteran of purchasing operations. As chief competitive officer, regarded as the No. 2 position below CEO Hiroto Saikawa, he has overseen production, research and development, and purchasing. Yamauchi is a director at Renault as well.

Also on Tuesday, Nissan announced that Daniele Schillaci, an executive vice president, will step down on May 15. Schillaci's departure is the latest by a series of officials who were close to ousted Chairman Carlos Ghosn.
